Protexin Paste- containing 180 million CFU/g
Unlike many other Probiotics that consist primarily of a single strain of bacteria, Protexin consists of seven different naturally occuring bacteria and two yeasts. The effectiveness and synergy of these strains has been proven in years of trials and production application. Protexin is an aid duting periods of intestinal dysfunction in all animals, including treatment and control of scouring or diarrhoea, post-antibiotic therapy in all animals for the re-establishment of gut microflora following antibiotic usage, improved weight gain and feed conversion in growing pigs and cattle, aids in the establishment of gastrointestinal microflora of physiologically immature animals, eg. day old chikcs, neonatal calves, foals, lambs and kids, puppies and kittens
Feeding Protexin to broodmares before and after foaling is recommended to help minimise digestive upsets and the effects of stress, to help ensure a plentiful supply of colostrum and to improve milk quantity and quality. Extensive research trials by Dr Michael Glade (USA) indicate that mares fed probiotics for six weeks prior to foaling, had foals which were 11cm taller and 21kgs heaver at eight weeks than foals from unsupplemented mares. Foals and other animals are born with a sterile gut which is colonised quickly after birth by many strains of bacteria. The ratio between the strains is important as both beneficial and harmful bacteria are present and if harmful bacteria dominate the microflora, foals can rapidly become very sick.Protexin may be administered to foals immediately after birth to flood the gut with beneficial bacteria and aid in the establishment of a healthy gut microflora. Other benefits of Protexin for foals include :-
Protection from scours/diarrhoea
Many of the cases of scouring so often seen in young foals are caused by bacterial infections. Protexin offers a natural alternative to antibiotics for the control of scour causing bacteria.
Protection from gut infection
Flooding the gut with beneficial bacteria in Protexin helps to prevent or suppress colonisation by harmful bacteria such as E.coli and Salmonella. A healthy digestive tract is essential for a healthy immune system and Protexin works to strengthen both.
Improved digestion of feed
Protexin helps improve the efficiency of digestion, leading to better feed conversion, better growth and less digestive upsets. Using Protexin to maintain a healthy, stable gut microflora also helps in the transition from milk to more solid food at weaning
Protexin helps horse's appetites by maintaining a healthy digestive tract, as well as supporting the young horse's natural immune system, to help them face the most demanding period of their lives
Daily Dosage Rates - Horses - Maintenance 10 g, Stress 20g. Ponies/Foals - Maintenance 5g, Stress 10g
Protexin should not be used in conjunction with Penicillins, Cephalosporins, Tetracyclines, Avoparcin, Gentomycin, Linomycin, Streptomycin, Tiamulin or Tylosin but may be used immediately following these antibiotics.
The balance of microbes in the gut is affected by many conditions and stresses. To minimise the impact of any changes, Protexin should be administered daily at maintenance levels. Protexin may be used on a short term basis to treat specific problems or times when increased stress is anticipated. The common sense approach to using Protexin is to stop problems before they start
The uniqueness of Protexin is not just confined to its multi-strain formulation. Research and Development has produced a special "protection" to ensure the highest possible numbers of bacteria survive the journey through the hostile conditions of the crop or stomach, into the gut where they rapidly begin to work for the benefit of the animal. Protexin's introduction to Australia makes it the first and to date, the only nationally registered Probiotic approved for administration to animals and birds.
What is a Probiotic and how does it work?
The digestive system of all animals and birds is home to literally billions of bacteria and yeasts referred to as Microflora.
Microflora are essential to the health of any animal; aiding the digestion, breaking down cellulose and other indigestible substances; helping the synthesis and absorption of vitamins and minerals; stimulating the immune system and preventing the proliferation of pathogens. (Pathogens reduce nutrient absorption, animal performance and cause disease).
