This new super soft netting is made from 5mm thick and high strength PP (polypropylene) with a super-strong 240ply, the strongest on the Australian market. Like the Gutzbuster regular knotted nets, the knotless hay nets are available in small, medium, large as well as round bales and export bales. This means the new nets are still super easy to fill due to nice wide-open mouths.

This product can be thrown on the ground if your horse isn’t shod. It doesn’t have metal joints, too, so you don’t have to worry about your horses’ teeth or mouths getting injured.

Both the knotless and knotted hay nets are made from GutzBusta® very own sizes that they have developed over the years with feedback from customers. They are superior in size, strength, and useability. Having a super wide mouth that makes them easy to fill is one of the greatest attributes of these nets.

It’s also important to note that you cannot compare the knotted nets to the knotless ones in terms of ply as they are made of entirely different materials. Ply refers to how many individual strands are in each section of the netting. The strength is in how strong those individual strands are, how tight they are, and what material they are made from. So you are comparing apples to oranges if you are comparing knotless to knotted in terms of ply.

Why are GutzBusta® Hay Nets so popular?

These products are designed with large and strong drawstrings to secure the hay net. It’s easier to put on compared to other hay nets available in the market. They've been making quality hay nets for over 8 years and therefore know how the netting behaves over time. This is why they developed a size and pattern that works to enable these nets to last longer.

For example a GutzBusta® Round Bale Hay Net decreases wastage by up to 46%. In our situation, a 4x4 round bale of pasture hay can last 3 to 4 horses for 7 to 15 days with a 4cm net, depending on how cold the weather is. This rate was for Winter, however, in Summer, we found that a 4x4 lasted these horses nearly 3 months due to being low sugar/palatability.

Which hay net hole size do I choose? Here are some considerations for choosing a Hay Net hole size!

2cm / ¾” Sized Holes

New to the range is the 2cm / ¾” sized holes in Extra Small, Small and now Medium. Large and 4x4 round bale in knotless netting only.

  • This sized hole is purely for extreme 'expert level' status horses/ponies that can still manage to devour from 3cm / 1 ¼” hay nets at quite impressive speeds.
  • Only recommended for horses or ponies that have mastered eating from a 3cm / 1 ¼” hay net.
  • Lucerne for greedy horses or ponies would be good fed in a 2cm / ¾” hay net.

3cm / 1 ¼” Sized Holes

  • The 3cm/1 ¼" hole size hay nets are ideal for ponies, miniatures, and horses that are voracious eaters.
  • Recommended for horses already accustomed to using a 4cm/1 ¾" hay net size, but require further slowing down in their feeding rate.
  • Useful for relieving boredom in yarded and stabled horses.
  • Can serve as a second net for continuous feeding once the first hay net is emptied.
  • Particularly beneficial for gutzy horses or livestock, ponies, or for very palatable, non-stalky hay.
  • Lucerne, and higher sugar, more palatable finer hays are suitable to feed in these nets.
  • Not commonly used for goats, cows, or sheep due to the palatability of the hay, but there are exceptions where these animals use this size hay net with tasty and palatable hay.

4cm / 1 ¾ Sized Holes

The most popular hole-sized net, the 4cm is a good place to start if you are unsure or new to slow feeding.

This 4cm / 1 ¾” netting hole size is a genuine slow-feeding hole size, but not too frustratingly so, being readily accepted by over 90% of horses. Good for slightly stalky hay, where you don't wish to slow down too much but still reap the rewards of hay saving and increasing the longevity of the hay you are feeding out.

  • The 4cm / 1 ¾" hole size hay nets are our most popular product, making them a great starting point for those new to slow feeding.
  • This hole size provides a genuine slow-feeding experience without causing excessive frustration, being accepted by over 90% of horses.
  • Suitable for slightly stalky hay, allowing you to balance between slowing down consumption and saving hay.
  • Utilising this hole size can help increase the longevity of the hay you're feeding out.
